A Bar Draught System is a process in which beer and other alcoholic beverages are served by pulling a tap and filling a glass or mug. Bar draughts are often used to serve beers from large casks or vats, but the term can also refer to local breweries that sell their product through kegs.

How does it work?

How does it differ from draft beer?

In a draft system, the beer (or other beverage) is dispensed from a hand pump or tap without any further processing. This means that the draught beer has not yet been chilled to the optimum temperature. The difference between a draft keg and a closed cask is that, in the latter, there is no possibility of evaporation creating Foam (gas bubbles) – whereas in a keg there is. The foam created by the CO2 in the keg is denser than air and so will rise to the top of the glass upon pouring.

A draught beer, due to its piping system, sits at a constant temperature. The whole system will be kept at a temperature that is warmer than the ideal serving temperature and the cask or keg will be kept colder (than say room temperature) so that it could be said that the beer delivered to your glass is not draft beer but still a draught beer.

What are the advantages of using a bar draught system?

One of the main advantages of the bar draught system is that it keeps pints fresh for longer. It can also be cheaper to run than a traditional hand pump system, as there is no need to replace gas cartridges on a regular basis. Cleaning and maintenance are also relatively simple.
